Improve your bargain hunting

Make your bargain hunting more effective (and organize yourself as well) with this new feature that we just launched. Interests in essence are keywords that will get highlighted as you browse deals. They work very similar to the search except you don't need to actually search - the search is always going in the background as you browse the deals. Add your interests one per line at this page and see how it works. Try not to add too short keywords that will produce a lot of useless highlights. Searching for the keyword before adding it will give you an idea if the keyword is a good candidate or not (use Search Entire Phrase option).

Uncertain what your interests are? Let us guess them for you based on the deals you save. Just enable Autogenerate and we will do our best to compile the list of keywords for you. If you do so you can then fine-tune the list of generated keywords by excluding some. Just add the undesired keywords to the Exclude list one per line and they will not be highlighted.

Just turned this on... The "try it now" button is very useful, that way, I can auto-generate from my saved deals, and trim it down to get stuff I think will produce good results. I don't think I will ever use the actual "auto-generate", but I probably will use the "Try it Now" button to help populate the keywords.

this feature actually seems more useful than I thought -- rather than highlighting items, necessarily, I can highlight stores that i like to buy from or that I have gift cards for.

Interesting, never thought of using it that way. Will see if it picks up. So far you and me are the only two people using it. ;-)

By the way, always wanted to ask you. How did you come up with such a hm... funny name? I hope I won't get banned from Google for search - keywords like that. :-)

waaay back in the carracho p2p days (basically ftp sharing with a nifty client), you could choose a little logo for your avatar -- I picked a "fish" and typed in fishfucker. I thought it was funny, and it seemed to occasionally piss people off, and so I kind of stuck by it ... it's sort of a play on the idea of internet personas.

anyhow, i spent some time "building" it up in the early days of Portal Of Evil, and after that it just kinda became my handle.

nowadays I'll usually use it with a little more discretion depending on what site I'm using -- usually if the site is MeFi related I'll use it because it's associated with my account over there.

i'm not so attached to it that I'd be opposed to changing it to something a little more family friendly (i use a regular name over on fw/sd, etc) -- i use mostly 'fishfriend' or 'rajbot' when I need a g-rated one -- just let me know.

yeah, but I'm liking the highlighting thing .. i'll probably add in "sears" and some other stuff to it.

    now back to the woot-off!

I have found another good use to it. You can highlight brands you like: sony, jvc, etc

If the admin is reading this -- is it possible to get an rss feed that combines both the FW and the equivelint SD forum? For example, a single rss feed for the best of the FW Free Stuff forum and the SD Freebies forum?

One RSS feed for freebies would make things much easier.

Not at this time. But, the plan is to eventually allow combining any number of forums for display and/or RSS feed. Now since you asked - I will consider releasing RSS before the traditional functionality is ready. Just give me some time... I will keep you informed.

Alright, custom feeds are working. Give them a try. This link points to the combined feed of Free Stuff (FW) and Freebies (SD):

    http://wireddeals.com/deals/web/feed/src/fw22+sd4/age/14400

Note the 'src' attribute which is set to 'fw22+sd4'. Here are the keys to use if you want to build a custom feed of your own:

    0 - All Forums

    fw18 - Hot Deals (FW)

    fw22 - Free Stuff (FW)

    fw52 - Finance (FW)

    sd9 - Hot Deals (SD)

    sd4 - Freebies (SD)

It is probably about time to add FAQ page to the web site. Let me know if there are any specific things you want to see there.
